Biography

Tengfei Luo's group uses quantum computing as an engine for materials and photonic design. His team developed quantum annealing-assisted active learning, which pairs machine learning surrogates with quantum annealers to search very large design spaces, and used it to create an experimentally validated transparent radiative cooler (ACS Energy Letters, 2022). With collaborators at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Kyung Hee University, the group is contributing to the development of distributed quantum optimization algorithms for quantum-centric supercomputers and to benchmarking quantum against classical solvers (npj Quantum Information, 2025, 2026). He is a guest editor of an IEEE JSTQE special issue on inverse design of photonics using quantum and classical computing.
